  • Win2k3 PDC BDC DNS Settings

I have a Windows 2003 Server environment. I am setting up 2 new domain controllers to to replace the existing DCs. I want to make sure DNS settings are properly set on the interface cards.

On the WIN2K3 PDC I set DNS server to itself

What about the DNS server on the BDC, do I set it to the PDC or to itself?

Both PDC and BDC will have DNS installed on eachother and DHCP for 100/100 failover.

    Any Advice ?

There is no PDC or BDC in Windows 2003 (or Windows 2000) server.

The servers point to their own IP for the Perferred DNS and each other as the Alternate DNS.
Read the following about transfering the FSMO Roles if you are not already familiar with this operation.

What do you mean by 100/100 failover for the DHCP?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

100/100 Failover means that there will be 2 DHCP servers providing IP addresses in different ranges for the same subnet

      Subnet 192.168.1.10 - 254

      DHCP Server 1 scope 192.168.1.10 to 100

      DCHP Server 2 scope 192.168.1.101 to 254

One server fails the other can still provide ip for same subnet.

As for PDC and BDC, I know that they are not called that anymore but for Backup DC reasons, is this the Best Practice:

DC1 with DNS: Set Prefered DNS to DC1 and Alternate DNS to DC2

DC2 with DNS: Set Prefered DNS to DC2 and Alternate DNS to DC1

      Am I correct ?

        Normally it's 80 / 20:

but unless you have < 50% workstations compared to available IP addresses i dont see why you cant do 50 / 50

Don't ignore what Biggles said about the FSMO roles, though!
