  • RIS & XP Installation

    Hello to all,

First time poster here on Petri! Forgive me for my questions may be many

I recently installed Windows Server 2003 with AD, DHCP and RIS.
I authorized the server and the distribution share was created.
I ran the RBFG.exe and completed the steps to create the network boot disk. The client machine boots and connects to the server.

My problem is that I used setup manager to create an answer file-it saves it to the server- C:\WinInst\remotboot.sif. I rename it winnt.sif, copy it to a floppy and pop it in after the network boot disk connects. I would like to perform a complete "unattended" installation. So far, my efforts have failed-while XP will install, I still end up having to type in "user name", "organization", and so on.

What did I miss? Where does this .sif file go?

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Alex

      Re: RIS & XP Installation

Thank you for a quick response. I have those articles and will re-check my steps.
The main problem I seem to have is they talk about the answer file (.sif or .txt) but I cannot see where the file is to be placed.

Again, thank you so much. I will double check my steps and start over.

      Best Wishes,

      Alex

just you to know RIS is a big and complex way to install OS on new computer but when it work it is working GOOD !
        for your Q
        \\server name\files\RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Images\img name \i386\templates\ristndrd.sif
