    Re: new server

    Why not:

    1. Add the new server to you AD Netwok
    2. Install DNS
    3. promote it to be an active directory server
    4. Let it replicate
    5. transfer the FSMO roles to the new server(http://www.petri.com/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm)
    6. denote the old server and remove it from the network

        Re: new server

Are they accessing a program or are they accessing a SHARE or even accessing a program in a SHARE?
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.

            Windows 2003 Domain Controller Rename:
            http://www.petri.com/windows_2003_do...ler_rename.htm

No recommended though... and please, please tell me that the server is just a DC and doesn't also hold other functions on it...
            Cheers,

              Re: new server

the server is a dc with about 100 clients. no ftp, not a webserver. but a dhcp
about 10 users are accessing a program on a shared folder though

                Re: new server

Last question. What is the program are they accessing? Does it run totally on the server or is there a client component installed on the workstation? Is it on a UNC path or a mapped drive?
As I said, last question so please provide ample info for me and others to make a basis for our answers. Having rename a Domain and a DC, I don't recommend it either. I ended up wiping everything a month later and doing a clean install.

                  Re: new server

the programs runs on the server. only a shortcut is created on the client pointing to the server. the program is athena - a library system we bought last year

the program is on a shared folder on the server. clients access thru - \\servername\athena\ath.exe

                    Re: new server

If it is only a shortcut, then what is the problem? All you need to do is create a new shortcut and deploy it to the clients that use it.

                      Re: new server

do i need to make the new server a global catalog before transferring roles?

i got this error : the transfer of the operations master cannot be performed bec: the the requested FSMO operation failed. The current FSMO holder cannot be contacted

                          Re: new server

thanks.. successfully transfered to the new server. my prob now is there're no internet connection for the clients. installed dhcp working fine i guess coz users are getting ip..

                          clients are getting these settings

                          ip - 192.168.0.x
                          subnet - 255.255.255.0
                          gateway - 192.168.0.2
                          dns - 192.168.0.2

                          server settings
                          ip - 192.168.0.2
                          subnet - 255.255.255.0
                          gateway - 192.168.0.1 (router)
                          dns - 192 - 192.168.0.2

i had forwarders on my dns
                          what i'm i missing?

                            Re: new server

Check your Client's gateway. Is the server setup to route from the client's gateway (192.168.0.2) to the actual gateway (192.168.0.1)?

                              correction too:

client is also getting dns as 192.168.0.1 not 192.168.0.2 i want my clients to get 192.168.0.2 as gateway and dns and must have internet connection.

i tried setting up router and dns server on the dhcp settings. it gets the right ips but it cant browse the net

how can i properly set-up the route?
