too many ports listening

  • too many ports listening

    i have a win2k member server and connected to the internet through dsl(multihomed).The NIC which is connected to the internet produces too many traffic and causes the net down..I gave the command netstat -an ,there i can see a lot of ports in listening .How can i fix that.(The exessive traffic.).

    Easy as 1.2.3.

    1. Disable any services that aren't being used but are listening.
    2. Disable any applications that might have listening ports.
    3. Use a software firewall and block outbound traffic except for allowed ports.

    Finally, make sure you understand what you're disabling or you'll be coming back asking why something is now broken.

      If you have working experience with IPSEC, you also can us it to block unnecessary internet traffic.
      It is free, strong and can be challenge to build a firewall solution.
