  • Migrating Windows Server 2003 AD to Windows Server 2008

    Hi all,

We are migrating the AD windows server 2003 R2 to Windows Server 2008 SP1. We followed the procedure for migration. Now we can able to see the users and GPO on the migrated windows 2008 server.

Is there any tool available to ensure GPOs and Users are successfully migrated?

i.e On server 2003, export the configurations (users & GPOs) on excel or text file

After migration on server 2008, export the configurations (users & GPOs) on excel or text file

Compare the two files and ensure the migration has been successful.

    Thanks in advance

Re: Migrating Windows Server 2003 AD to Windows Server 2008

Can you please explain exactly what it is that you have done??

Have you migrated to a new domain from your existing one?

Basic steps for upgrading your domain should simply be

    1. Run adprep /forestprep
    2. Run domainprep /gpprep
    2. Run domain prep /rodcprep
    4. Install and update a Server 2008 SP1 server, any reason why 2008 R2 wasn't used??
    5. Promote said system to be a dc.
    6. Allow replication to occur.
    7. Demote old DC's
    8. Allow replication to occur.

Voila. You have successfully migrated to a Server 2008 domain.

      Hi wullieb1,

      Thanks for your reply.

ya .. we have done the AD migration form windows server 2003 to windows 2008.

Now we can able to see the users and GPOs and we are assuming that all are migrated successfully (we randomly checked some of the users and GPO and it got migrated successfully).

Now we want to ensure all the users and GPO were migrated .. How to check it?

Still don't know if it was a domain upgrade that was done or a brand new domain created then users migrated across.

And again can you please explain to us what you have done?

Its still not clear what you have carried out and how you carried out your "migration"

Did you upgrade your domain or did you create a brand new domain??

              Hi,

Migrate the same domain on new windows server 2008 by

              1. Run adprep /forestprep
              2. Run domainprep /gpprep
              3. Run domain prep /rodcprep ....

              When I run /domainprep /gpprep i got the error.
find the attachment of the error for your reference ,

But we have ignored the error and proceed the migration.. will it cause any issues..

                [Status/Consequence]

Adprep requires access to existing domain-wide information from the infrastructure master in order to complete this operation.
I would say that adprep hasn't worked properly for the reason above.

What DC is your IM on??
