  • Shadow Copies - set to max - not showing up in "Previous Versions"

    Hi all,

Paranoia set in from Cryptolocker - so I decided to increase the number of shadow copies. I went to:

    HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesVSSSettings
I found out that the standard max number is 64 but with a regedit I could increase to 512. I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\VSS\Settings\MaxShadowCopies - I created a DWORD of MaxShadowCopies of decimal 512.

I can go to the server and check the shadow copies - they are being created.

Problem - all of the clients - XP, win7, other 2003 & 2008 servers - none of them can see the shadow copies under the Previous Versions tab.

There are recommendations of disabling SMB2, but that sounds extreme.

Any solutions for this out there?

    Thanks,
    Rob

I haven't looked into the viewing issue but creating more shadow copies won't help if the server gets infected. Cryptolocker deletes all shadow copies.

Hi - thanks for the info.

Another Q - it looks like I am going to set this all back to default - 64 shadow copies.

Should I just delete the MaxShadowCopies entry? Or would I need to set it to 64?

You should be able to delete the value and reboot.
