  • which is easier: DC/DNS server ip change

We have a server that needs to come down from maintenance. Its a windows 2000 sp4 DC in windows 2000 native domain. It carries no FSMO roles and is a secondary DNS server that is ad intergrated.

Is it easier to A: Assign it a different ip address, give its existing IP address to another DC and make that a secondary DNS?

or B: setup a secondary DNS on another DC, script netsh so when users login, it will change their secondary DNS setting to the new server

Ideally it would be great to just change the ip address of the older server thats coming. It is a big unstable so I am not sure after we investigate into it if we will continue to use the old server or not.

what do you guys think which is easier?

    1. Setup both server as DNS servers.
    2. Verity DNS zone recplication.
    3. Setup client to use both DNS (DC's) IP's.
