  • RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

    Hi,

    DC1, Windows server 2003
    DC2, Windows server 2003
    DC3, Windows server 2008
    DC4, Windows server 2008
    DHCP/DNS are Linux.

Something screwed up on DC2, so I have depromoted it from being AD/DC...
then reinstalled, and promoted it to be AD/DC (2003 again, as I need to buy a new licence later on)
So all went well, apart from there are no dns records of DC2.

    So I did a ipconfig /registerdns,
    then
Registration of DNS records failed: The RPC server is unavailable, message appears instantly.

    Doesnt work for DC1 neither
but yet, DC3 and DC4 works just fine.

So how I am able to register dns records into the dns server?
without manually doing it, as the DNS server does allow the windows servers to do it automatically.

So I am thinking there's something on 2003 isn't working, or disabled, or something, I am not sure.

Can anyone help? - and I can't remember what I did do register it's dns the first time, several years ago...

    Many thanks

Is the DHCP client service running? This is required for dynamic DNS registration regardless if the NIC is configured for DHCP or not.

That would be your issue. Are you not the administrator on the server?

Re: RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

Have you tried using services.msc on another server and then remotely connecting to the server? As indicated, the DHCP Client service does need to be started and set to automatic.

Re: RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

Yes I did that and I have set it to automatically as well, but still access denied, even restarted, and when login box appears message appears, "one or more services have failed to start"
              I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895149,

even though this is to an 'upgraded' system, but mine are fresh-installed, and still get access denied.

Well, I may ask the unix guy to input the DNS settings manually...
but it be nice if Server 2003 can do it by itself....

Found this in the 'Help and Support' from an event viewer event, of DHCP

"The DHCP Client service is shutting down. The following error occurred :
              Access is denied. "

              =============================
              Details
              Product: Windows Operating System
              ID: 1004
              Source: Dhcp
              Version: 5.0
              Component: DHCP
              Symbolic Name: EVENT_SERVER_INIT_DATABASE_FAILE
Message: The DHCP service failed to initialize the database. The following error occurred:
              %1

              Explanation
This event record indicates that the DHCP database is corrupted.

              User Action
Remove the corrupted database and replace it with a clean backup copy. Additional information on restoring the DHCP database can be found in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
              ===============================

but I have no DHCP server installed on the server, and c:\windows\system32\dhcp has nothing in it....

I have server 2003 not a Domain Controller, and that works fine though...
              Sigh.

              Further help?

              Thanks

Re: RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

Did you choose a different name for the machine?

If the issue persists, and you want to use the same name, try demoting the DC and do a metadata cleanup on all the DC's Check your DNS to make sure that the records for the old DC no longer exist (check everything). Then run dcpromo again.

If that does not work, do the same, but this time do a full re-installation.

Re: RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

                  No, used the same name.

I would love to depromote the DC but can't due to DNS lookup failures....
which is why I want to register its DNS entries....

And if I do want to to install server 2008 on the machine,
can I just turn off the machine,

and follow this http://www.petri.com/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm to remove the DC from AD?

                  ....

                  Thanks

Re: RPC server is unavilable: registerdns

Yes - but you must check the DNS records. I have had two DC failures - once on a 2003 domain several years ago and recently on a domain with 2003 and 2008. The metadata cleanup failed to remove the DNS entries for the failed DC's each time. This is why I recommend you check all the nodes on your DNS server to ensure that it is clean *before* you re-introduce a DC with the same name as one that has failed.

                      OK,

I'm going to get the dns/dhcp admin to manually remove or import dns entries for dc2.
something is screwed up with nslookup

dc2 has a srv record, but doesnt appear in the list at the bottom where it tells you the ip address for the dc's....
