  • FSMO roles issue

We have a DC blue screening so we are planning on demoting it, and standing up a new one. We have 1 other 2003 server running as a DC as well. When I go on the first computer (red), and look at the FSMO roles, it says that red is the holder (which is correct).

When I go to the second DC (tony), and check the FSMO roles, it says ERROR.. and i cannot change it. I do not want to seize the roles because the old one will be on network so i can try to demote it.

Any suggestions? Any ideas why i cannot transfer it?

Run netdiag and dcdiag on both DC's. Check the event logs on both DC's.
Do you have current backups of both DC?

Its a network I dont usually work on so I would say yes. I will run those. I think an issue is.. that networkings all messed up. I just tried pinging each machine and it cant resolve. Ill try that first.

If you can, run an ipconfig /all on both DC and post the results. (sanitize as necessary)
