    Group policy and logon scripts seem the best way
    If you were at Server 2008 you could use GPPs

    You could also check out printer deployment options in the Print role (2003R2 IIRC)

        Have you considered a consultant?
        Without seeing your environment, it is difficult to give specific help

            And the printer is shared on a server?

                Since it's 2003 you can create a GPO linked to the OU where the Computer objects reside.
                Use this as a LOGON scripts (User section):
                Code:

                =======
                Set objNetwork = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")
                objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\PrintServer\HPLaser2"
                objNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\PrintServer\HPLaser2"
                ======
                Also enable the Looback processing policy and set it to Merge (on the Computer section)

                That should do the trick.
                Obviously much easier in 2008 where you can use GPP to achieve the same.
