  • Scheduled NTbackup causes server to hang

NTbackup sometimes causes our Server 2003 Standaard R2 to hang.

If I run the backup manually from NTbackup, it runs fine. But when the backup is scheduled, sometimes the server hangs. This is happening 3 or 4 days in a week.

Below the messages that are displayed in the Event Viewer:

23:00:11 Event 7036 from Service Control Manager
The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

    followed by

    07:53:36 Event 6008 from EventLog
The previous system shutdown at 23:04:23 on 30/08/2011 was unexpected.

You can try to check the dump file to see if that can point you in the right direction.

How to enable the dump file

How to analyze the dump file

Note that the server doesn't respond anymore and it must be shutdown with the on/off-button.

Ah yes, that would present a problem. Do you have any other backup programs on the server? Any other VSS providers installed? Have you gone through the programs installed on the server and removed all that are not in use?

It's rather hard to troubleshoot an issue that gives no feedback and could be caused by numerous things.

Re: Scheduled NTbackup causes server to hang

Before using NTbackup i have installed BackupAssist en HP Protector Express. Those had the same problems and are also uninstalled from the system.

Recently have updated all the driver/firmware of the mainboard, SCSI Controller, etc.

          There is only provider available:

Provider Name: Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider 1.0
          Provider Type: System

          Provider ID: (b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5)
          Version: 1.0.0.7

There are only programs on our server that we are using, all the other programs are uninstalled.

Executing vssadmin list writers says that all the writers are stable.

The server does not display an BSOD, but just freezes en doesn't respond anymore.

To get the server back online, we have to power it down throught the on/off-switch.

Can you get remote access to the event logs / system manager?

You mean when the server hangs?

Re: Scheduled NTbackup causes server to hang

No, the server is inaccessible at that moment. Also the mouse and keyboard are not responding.

Since the start of this topic everynight the backup causes the server to hang.
After manually shutdown the server, i've started the same backup-file (backup.bks) manually. This is working OK.

There is also no error/warning in the eventlog at the time that the server hangs. So I don't now what the cause of the problem is.

Are you sure it's NTbackup that's causing the issue? What happens if you don't schedule the backup and just run it manually? (like you've been doing)
                      Regards,

If I don't schedule a backup the server doesn't hang. It only hangs when NTbackup is scheduled.

I hate to beat this to death but are you sure? In your post you said that it would hang 3-4 times a week. Have you tried running the backup manually for a week to see if the server still hangs?

No, a few week ago I've made no backup for a week. In that week the server didn't hang. I also made 2 or 3 backup manually, with success.
