  • Mandatory Desktop, but not complete mandatory profile

    Ive combed through many posts about mandatory profiles, and while I understand the concept/process, it is actually more than I need.
    My users have LARGE profiles, in the 5gb-10gb range. I do not wish to move all of these profiles out to the server, given that there is a a relatively high turn over rate at this particular company.
    Sales manager wants all users to have a standard desktop/icon structure, and prevent users from making changes. Standard wallpaper would be a plus, but not a necessity.
    How do I force mandatory desktops, but not full-on mandatory profiles.

    Server 2003 w/AD and DNS
    All clients but two are WinXP Pro

    Thoughts ?

    If we use the following process, how can we force a designated desktop ?

    >>>>

    USER
    Administrative Templates\
    Desktop\
    Active Desktop
    =>Enable Active Desktop
    =>Prohibit changes
    =>Prohibit adding items
    =>Prohibit deleting items

      Put the relevant pic in a location that can be accessed by all machines.

      User > Administrative Templates > Extra Registry Settings >

      Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \Explorer\ForceActiveDesktopOn 1
      Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \Explorer\HideSCAHealth 1
      Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \System\Wallpaper LOCATIONOFJPEG
      Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \System\WallpaperStyle 2

      These are the settings i have in my GPO for my windows 7 clients and it works perfectly.

        Thanks for the response. Will this keep them from adding/deleting icons as well ?
        Also... there are about 6 "managers" that would need to be excluded from this policy. Curious on that as well. Thanks again.

          No it won't stop the adding of icons. I don't think you can stop them adding icons that i'm aware of.

          You would need to put these "managers" into a different OU that does not get the policy applied to them.

            This might help though.

            Good luck.
