  • What to do before transferring your DC into different location?

    Hello Guys,

I'm planning to transfer a Domain Controller (DC1) which is also our primary DNS. Coming from old building going to new data center. Definitely IP address will be change into different segment.. Second Domain Controller (DC2) is already up and running in new data center..

How do I make things smooth without affecting our production? Any steps needed? Here are the FSMO roles of these servers:

    PDC Master: DC1
    RID Master: DC1
    Infrastructure Master: DC1

    Schema Master: DC2
    Domain Naming Master: DC2
    Global Catalog Server: DC2

Do I need to transfer all roles to DC2 before shutting down DC1?.. What about DNS?. Wouldn’t there be an issue since DC1 is set as primary, and DC2 in secondary? Can DC2 resolve DNS queries even though DC1 is dead?

Should just be a case of change IP, shutdown, move, restart
Missing FSMOs is fine for a short period
If properly configured, DC2 should have no DNS issues at all
