  • Disk Read Error RAID5

    Hello,

I have been asked to assist with recovering important data from a server that has six drives in a RAID5 setup for a Windows 2003 Std server. One of the drives failed and during the rebuild they tried booting it into windows and it failed. Now on boot it says "A disk read error occured, hit ctrl + alt + del to restart". The array says it is bootable but obviously I cannot get past that to recover data.

I also hate to say that the backups they were doing were going to drives that were not working so now this recovery is high priority (they didn't even bother checking that backups were working)

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Re: Disk Read Error RAID5

    Could you tell us:
What OS and SP it is?
    What make/model of server?
More about the RAID -- HW or SW, what controller?

Can you boot into e.g. BartPE and access the drive -- data recovery is your first and only consideration
Consider a DR specialist -- whatever they charge, it will be less than the value of the data

      Hi Ossian,

What OS and SP it is?
      Windows 2003 Standard x32 SP 2

      What make/model of server?
      Supermicro X7DB8

More about the RAID -- HW or SW, what controller?
      Hardware Intel 632xESB Raid Controller

I will see if I can boot into BartPE.

            Re: Disk Read Error RAID5

Is the O/S on the RAID 5 or have they been smart and put the O/S on a RAID 1 and the Data on the RAID 5?
            1 1 was a racehorse.
            2 2 was 1 2.
            1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
            2 2 1 1 2
