  • Help Please! Web Base Domain user password management using IIS

    Hi masters!

    Most domain users do not logon to domain at their workstation. So, they won't have a chance on changing their password. I wanted to have a web base password management tool for our domain. The first thing I did was to follow these;

    Basic steps:
    A. The version of Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 that ships with Windows 2003 includes some Web-administration tools that are disabled by default. To enable the tools, perform the following steps:

    • Run Internet Information Server (IIS) Management.
    • Under the default website choose New->virtual Directory to start the wizard
    • Name the site IISADMPWD
    • The publish folder value is enter C:\windows\system32\inetsrv\iisadmpwd
    • For permissions make sure Read and Run scripts are checked

The page is accessible via http: //localhost/iisadmpwd/aexp2b.asp but when I tried to change password I get redirected and page error at https: //localhost/iisadmpwd/achg.asp?

How do I make (or do I need to convert)
http: //localhost/iisadmpwd/aexp2b.asp into https: //localhost/iisadmpwd/aexp2b.asp to be able to work?

By the way we don't have an exchange yet.. But I hope it wouldn't be a factor..

Please enlighten me guys! thanks in advance..

I'm a bit unclear as to what you're trying to acheive.

Firstly - your users aren't logging on to the domain.. this is an issue in itself, enforce domain logons.
Secondly, if they aren't logging on using their domains, then why would you want them using a web interface to change their domain passwords (since they don't use them)
thirdly - if they don't use the passwords anyway, how will tey remember to change them ?

Actually these users are VIP's. I've set their passwords to never expire. They are using our internal messaging which is active directory integrated.... maybe that's why...

Re: Help Please! Web Base Domain user password management using IIS

What client are they using for accessing their mail? What about the' messaging' server that maintains the database?

This is worth reviewing. You could enforce the password policy and request that users reset their passwords when they are due to expire.

Re: Help Please! Web Base Domain user password management using IIS

They were accessing mail via lotus notes client. (kinda old school ) and it's not AD integrated.. The messaging was an open source server (openfire) binded to AD, with mysql database installed.

quest password manager is good, but what about IIS? how can it work for me?

yea.... I said this right at the beginning.
It's kind of pointless trying to do whiat he wants to do..

Passwords can become compromised, or a user may have reason to suspect their password may have been compromised. A user may have difficulty remembering their password without writing it down. In either of these situations, continuing to use the same password is a pretty bad idea.
