  • A domin controller could not be contacted

When attempting to have one pc join our domain I get the domain, "A domain controller for xxx could not be contacted"

I've had several computers join the domain just recently. One the day before. What steps to I need to do to troubleshoot this?
I have all XP pro machines and a Server 2003 server/DC
I already know I'm not that bright. Please be constructive. Only give your 2cents if it helps. Don't be condesending or demeaning. It doesn't make you look smart. You just look like an arse.

Check the PC's network configuration. Ensure it has the right IP address on the correct subnet as well as DNS/WINS pointing to the correct server(s).

Can you Packet Internet GroPer the Server? IP and/or Name
      Is the Firewall enabled?
Any anti virus installed that may have a firewall enabled?
Check IPCONFIG /ALL on the client and see if it is picking up DHCP settings from Server (assuming you are using DHCP).
If using Static IP, check that the IP is correct.
Check Event Viewer on the client.
Provide more info in initial post about what you have done.

[Edit: Apologies scurlaruntings. I did read your post and then added your suggestion to my reply. Sorry about that.]

after you make sure you are on the same subnet

        with XP
        right click my network icon
right click the network adaptor and select properties
        select internet protocol (tcp/ip)
        click properties

on the bottom select "use the following DNS server adress"
and enter the ip adress of your DC

check your credentials; format should be:

          domain\username
          password

          or

          [email protected]
          password
