  • Windows 2003: creating volumes on a dynamic disk

    Hi guys.. and girls.

Just a quckie, I have currently just set up a domain at my house. (Just for practice during my MCSA) and have come across a problem with creating new volumes. I have converted the basic disk to a dynamic one and within computer management i right click on the disk. I can see the create new volume option, but this is greyed out and cannot be used. I also tried the command line but this did not work either.

below is some info which may come in handy.

The disk file system is ntfs.
    I'am logged in as administrator

    Thanks in advance

How many HDDs do you have in this machine?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

its not partitioned (just one 80gb hd). Just installed windows server 2003 and have a Domain controller and a dns server running. Previously it was windows xp pro.

Ok, with this information, tell me why the Create Volume option is greyed out. Not trying to be difficult, just want you to think out the answer. Think of it as practice for your MCSA.

I'm thinking..... you can't create volumes on a system with one main hard drive. I thought you could, but maybe for some reason you cannot.

Pop in another HDD and see what happens (after converting).
