    Re: Fsmo

For a single domain it's pretty simple.

    Setup:

1 Domain with 2 DC's, (1 DC holding all FSMO roles).

Say the DC with all roles goes down for whatever reason, all clients should still be able to logon\authenticate using the 2nd DC.

If this is a temp problem, then just work on bringing your 1st DC back online, if it's completely knackered, then what I would do is seize all roles to your 2nd DC and then work on getting the other online.

NOTE : You cannot restore the old DC into your domain once the Schema master has been seized. I personally would just bring it online as a new DC and remove all references to the old one in AD.

Disclaimer : This is my opinion on doing this, may not be the best and\or correct but works for me. It depends on your network setup etc.

    topper.

      Two trivial additions:
      1. Both DC's should be Global Catalog
      2. All domain members should have _both_ DC's in their DNS settings.
