  • Backing up Windows Primary DNS server ?

    Hi All,

I'm about to do DNS replication from one site to another and just precaution what should I backup in case the replication goes wrong and how to restore it.

Is there a fast and easy way to backup our primary DNS server on Windows Server 2003 ?

    Thanks.

Do you want to backup the entire server or just DNS???

Backup the system state and it should backup AD and DNS for you.

just the DNS components Wullie, so I found out that using the NTBackup util. i can do the system state, but not sure how to restore only the DNS components if it does failed ?

when I tried to export the list, it can only export as TXT file but there is no way to import it back ?

      cmiiw ?

If it is AD Integrated DNS, the info is stored in the ntds.dit file and can only be backed up via system state. If not, just back up the zone files.

TBH, it is not worth worrying about -- replication is very unlikely to damage anything -- it may fail, but the original copy is OK.

          thanks for the reply Ossian,

what I mean is the wrong IP address that is propagated to the primary DNS server in case I made a mistake in transferring the IP data.

Sorry, not getting what you mean there.

Can you confirm if it is AD integrated DNS or not?

Will it be a DC that you MAY make a mistake on???

I'm with Tom in that i'd create a new DB and allow replication to occur, obviously if its AD integrated.

the primary DNS yes it is, but for this case, my server in the branch office I plan not to make it as DC so it won't be AD integrated.

OK -- that will get interesting...
ROughly (I will need to check on this...)
Allow zone transfers on primary DNS and add BO server to list
On BO server, set primary DNS as source of info.

                  No backups needed.

Why don't you want the Branch Office server to be a DC -- lots of side benefits by doing to
