  • How to download updates, patches files of Windows?

    Dear all
Normally if you want to update, patch your current Windows, you can use "Windows Update" feature. But my server just uses Local Area Network and can't connect to Internet. When I install new Windows OS (for example Windows 2003) in new server, I want to get all service patches, updates for this Windows version up to now to apply to this server.
"Windows Updates Downloader" tool is very useful for me, I use another PC that can connect to Internet to download these files. But its update list (ULs) is not up to date (just Mar-2010) and is not enough (lacks of Windows 2003 x64).
Please advice me other way to get list and download these files.

    Thanks very much.

If you have access to a server connected to the internet, you can install WSUS and then set your server to run WSUS as a disconnected downstream server

Basically you export the WSUS database and files on the connected server and import it on your server

        Hi,

use microsoft security baseline. Run this from the system which has connectivity to internet and appropriate prvilegde to read data wmi data from the server. It will give you complete list of patches. I can also download patches for you (but not sure i used it in past)

Alternatively. you can manually download the patches from following site.
        catalog.update.microsoft.com

If I need to update 100 patch files for 5 new Windows server, it's better if these patch files are extracted before, so I just only need to extract once not 5 times.

But I don't know how to run update by folder of extracted files instead of run EXE file ?

Re: How to download updates, patches files of Windows?

                Hi,

There is no need to extract these files. You can use command line switch

KBPatchNo.exe /z /m and run this. You can then put these on one folder and script then using batch file

go to command prompt and change directory to the patch dir.

                issue the following command
                dir /b > PatchName.txt

This will generate the patch names and out them to text file
                for /f %i in (test.txt) do %i /m /z

                  Yes, correct.
I have another way to make Batch file
                  In folder of update files:
                  Code:
                  dir *.exe /w > list.txt
Open list.txt by Notepad, find ".exe", replace with ".exe /m /z"

Depending on your site, Autopatcher is quite a good option, especially when building a new machine that needs the lot.

nLite is another option to keep install CD/DVDs moderately up to date.
