  • Demote 2003 backup DC - Remove DNS?

    Hi All,

Currently have 4 DCs in my domain, 2 originals and 2 I've built new to replace them.

OLDDC1 is staying put for now as it has a legacy exchange install I have to sort out from the previous guy. OLDDC2 is the one I'm working one now.

I've got NEWDC2 running and have swapped its IP with OLDDC2 as this was my secondary DNS server so was easier than updating all the static IPs out there. This is fine now. DNS is AD integrated too.

So, do I need to remove DNS from OLDDC2 before I run DCPROMO or can I just dcpromo it back to a member server and then remove DNS/WINS from it?

Sorry its a simple question, not done this for years so just wanted to check.

    Thanks!

    Andy

If it is active directory integrated DNS, best to remove that first then demote. WINS will not matter but in general, (IMHO) remove all related roles (DNS, DHCP, WINS) before demoting
