You're better off by stopping it from starting up - this is fairly easy to do with group policies. In addition, there is a free utility on the internet called something like 'killthemessenger' which stops it when it starts

I think your thinking of the messenger service which is different from MSN Messenger.

Personally i would un-install it from each PC. You can do this by adding the following command to your logon script

      RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This will un-install it from the machines.

        wullieb1,

don't you had problems with outlook then?
I've seen problems that outlook didn't receive messages instantly but after about 15 minutes (the automatic send/receive shedule). Don't know why exacly but reinstalling outlook didn't do the trick but after installing windows messenger everything was fixed.

however, have a look at this url

        or just google it:

I've done it on a few machines and never had any problems. I'll try it again at work on Monday though.

            situation with us:

Outlook was installed, and later we removed MSN messenger.
Maybe that was the problem, but i'm not for sure.

there are a number of other ways to sign into messenger just do a search on google for messenger and webmessenger

                  examples:
                  http://webmessenger.msn.com

                  www.webmessenger.com

                  etc
