  • Multi Domain Setup

    Here is the setup:

First Server: W2K Server running AD, DHCP (192.168.1.x), DNS DC in Native Mode. This Server is primarily a file server now.
Second Server: W2K3 as member server in the same domain running Exchange 2K3 Standard.

We are putting into service a new W2K8 Server that will run Exchange 2K7 Enterprise.

I need all three servers operational simultaneously until all mailboxes are transferred to the new Exchange Server. Then the Second Server (W2K3) will be reconfigured to be our file server and the W2K will be decommissioned.

Should I bring up the W2K8 Server in a new forest or as a second DC (not child) with AD in the existing forest? During the transition, users that logon to the new AD on the W2K8 Server must be able to access folders & files on the W2K Server.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Rob Tapp

    Re: Multi Domain Setup

No, you do not need to set up a new forest unless your company has changed name or something.

A Second DC is fine by just running DCPromo on a new server and give it time to replicate data across (48 hrs is usually enough).

Do it as a swing migration -- bring up the new servers and give them the roles.
Once users have picked up the new ones, gradually decommission the old ones
