  • WSUS 3.0 SP2 & Windows 2000 Server Support

(Sorry if this is the incorrect forum, couldn't find one specifically for WSUS)

We are currently testing WSUS 3.0 SP2 and after reading the differences between the Release Notes for SP1 and SP2, myself and a colleague are debating the support of Windows 2000 Server.

The client requirements for SP1 state:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, any edition
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4, Windows 2000 Server SP4, or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP4

Whilst the client requirements for SP2 state:
    • Windows® 7
    • Windows Vista®
    • Windows Server® 2008 R2
    • Windows Server® 2008
    • Windows Server 2003
    • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later
    • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4) and later
As you can see, it only specifically states Windows 2000 (not server) for SP2.

After doing some testing though, whilst only Windows 2000 is listed in WSUS 3.0 SP2 in the list of available operating systems... it will still push those updates out to a Windows 2000 Server OS.

Is this just a wording/interpretation issue and that both Server and Client are both collated into "Windows 2000" or is it not supported but will still allow you to update?

Just wanted an official word really on what the situation is with Windows 2000 Server and WSUS 3.0 SP2 (especially on why the updates still work if it is indeed not supported anymore).

    Re: WSUS 3.0 SP2 & Windows 2000 Server Support

AFAIK WSUS does not differentiate between versions of Windows 2000 but both Server and Pro are supported
You could use computer groups to do that (target updates)

Of course there will not be any more updates for Win2K
