I'd make sure you don't have a publiclly accessibly wireless network,
lock down any network ports you don't know to be in use
    audit your wireless network

chances are, people have bought in devices that don't belong, or have built virtual workstations or servers that don't belong...

I see the same thing when one of our staff uses her own laptop at work. At home, her laptop is connected to a home network, and when she connects a new workgroup with that name always appears in the list of networks.

        righto cheers guys!

our wireless network has a disgustingly hard random hex passkey so i woudl be surprised if anyone has jumped on that.

i think the bringing in laptops from other networks sounds like a likely culprit

will these names drop automatically when the devices have been removed?

          they should, yes

and even if not.. if you understand why they are there, is it a concern ?

Yes - though it may take a short while for them to go. On our network they usually disappear quite quickly, though I have not actually timed it so cannot give you an absolute time. They certainly disappear within a day or so.

But - they are nothing to worry about, if they have been generated by staff laptops.
