  • Server 2003 - Unable to login - Netlogon

    Hi All
I have inherited a Server 2003 with an unfortunate error.

No computers in the LAN can login and when trying to login at the server directly I get the following:

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

When I try to login with
    servername\administrator

    I receive an error:
Unable to log you on because the netlogon service is not running

So I cannot get into the server which is a DC and DNS server.

I cannot view Event Viewer or access the registry.

Any solutions or a workaround ?

    Regards
    Robbie

Have you tried accessing it remotely via Computer Management, or RDP, psexec, or another utility? Do you know if it's been rebooted recently? Rebooting COULD fix it (by getting that service started), but it's not something I'm suggesting yet. Got any other DCs there? Any important data on that server?

I presume from what you say that it is a DC

Sounds as if AD is not starting properly
      Can you boot into DSRM?
Do you have a recent system state backup you can restore?

Yes I have tried accessing it via RDP with the same result unfortunately.
Have also attempted a reboot. No other DC's and yes important data as it's hosting email.

Backup can not be confirmed as I have inherited this setup.
        Will a DSRM lose data/configuration ?

DSRM is "directory services restore mode" so you can fix active directory errors

If it is critical and you do not feel confident in your skills, get a consultant!

            I presume email's not working?

Try running dcdiag and netdiag first...

Re: Server 2003 - Unable to login - Netlogon

Thankyou for all the replies. It appears the previous consultant removed their own remote support software which caused some important services to stop loading. When I attended onsite and logged in directly I was able to login which was a nice relief. I then started the required services manually.

However the new problem is that when a reboot is performed the following services are not starting automatically:

                Netlogon
                Terminal Services
                Blackberry
                Information Store

                Any ideas ?

What roles does this server hold?

For the services you mention, how are they set to start and what action on error?

Are they set to start Automatically or have they been changed to Manual. A quick check in Services, Properties should confirm this. They may have been set to Manual when their support software was removed, or maybe not.

The services mentioned are on Automatic with a restart attempt is failed to load on 1st attempt.
