  • Redirect network share

We are migrating from Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2.

We used a share on the 2003 box called \\server\newco.

The files need to be moved to the new 2008 R2 box and re-shared using DFS to both \\server2008\newco and \\domainname.local\newco.

While I will use GPO's to remap the Mapped Network Drives to the new share, there are various applications around that are using the UNC path and not the mapped drive letter and will stop working when I move the data.

Is there a way to redirect the share so when people access \\server\newco they will automatically be redirected to \\server2008\newco???

    Please advise

    Thanks

    Re: Redirect network share

If the Server 2003 box is being retired for this, create a CNAME (alias) entry in your DNS? Make an entry which resolves "Server" to "Server2008". That way any legacy stuff should find their way to the new folder.

Or you could just give the new server the same name if the old one is retiring.
