  • Can not create a partition in widows 2003 and disk Q

    Hi,

I have some 500GB of unallocated space in windows 2003 STD R2 X64 server.
We use the server for SQL 2005 server.

While installing the server and configuring it after windows startup, i was able to add partitions. Today I can not. there is no "create partition" ability on mouse right click.

    Disk configuration: Raid 10 (8 2.5" disks).

Why this create partition option disappeared ?

My second question is, should I convert the disk to Dynamic disk, or use the exsisting "basic disk" configuration ?

    Thanks

Can you post a screen shot?

I would leave the disks as basic unless there's some functionality you need from dynamic.

The reason you can't add anymore partitions is because you can only have 4 primary partitions on a disk. What you need to do is:
            1. backup all the data on the last partition
            2. delete the partition
            3. create an Extended partition
            4. create logical drives for the space you need

EDIT: I made a change in the steps because you'll need contiguous space to create the Extended partition so it needs to be the last partition.

              Thanks,

What should I do if some day I will need to resize the 3rd partition (and not the last one - 4th) ?

Does converting to Dynamic disk will solve this ?

Is there an option to use Diskpart instead of deleting the partition ?

Re: Can not create a partition in widows 2003 and disk Q

converting to dynamic won't help you with what you're trying to achieve right now.

Diskpart also won't help you, as you cannot create another partition, even if you resize them.
There is a limit of 4 "core" partitions on a disk. That means you can have 3 Primary and 1 Extended partition. The extended partition can then have more logical partitions within it.
There's still a limit, but i'm not sure what it is.

As tehcamel answered your other questions I'll answer this one.

If some day you need to resize partitions then you will need to delete them and recreate them if there is no contiguous free space next to it. So the only one you can currently resize is the last partition because it is the only one that has free space next to it. I should note that Windows does not include the utility to do that in 2003 but there are plenty of tools out there that can.

Thank you all for the help and information.

Should I use 3'rd party software which know how to manage partitions like PQMagic Etc ... ?

Maybe these programs will help me do changes in an easy way ?

You could, but it would cost you
Easiest to follow advice and backup last partition, then delete it and create an extended one

Correcting something above, dynamic disks do not have a limit on the number of volumes but because this is your only disk array, you may have problems converting the system partitions (Searching for links on that, but i have memories of some issues)

Wouldn't you just be better using DISKPART to extend the G:, which is the last partition on the disk???

Yes, please post some more information about the error.

Also, I've used extpart.exe to extend many partitions. Even the system partition. If it doesn't work when booted normally, boot into safe mode and try it again.
