  • There are multiple accounts with name cifs

Windows 2003 server, child domain in ad forest.
The error I am getting is this one

There are multiple accounts with name cifs/filesvr1 of type DS_SERVICE_PRINCIPAL_NAME.

Another child domain joined and now we both have a computer named filesvr1.
All the information I have found so far says to disjoin the forest, rename one of the computers and then re-join the forest.
Is there any way that both of these computers can exist in there own child domains and keep the same name. And if we just ignore this error what problems will arise with kerboros?

Is there a solution that will let us both keep the same computer names?

If the servers are in seperate domains then this shouldn't really cause a problem, although you will get the KDC errors in the logs.

Are the SPNs not registered using FQDN e.g CIFS/filesvr1.domain.com as this would resolve your issue.

You could delete the CIFS SPN from both servers and recreate using the FQDN.
