  • Windows update server with IIS

I have a WIN3k Box with 5 user cals running in a small office; I am planning to install the windows update server on this box.

This will be domain controller /dns and windows update server.

I have used the iss locked down tool, what other steps should I ensure to have a reliable and safe set up which won’t be compromised.

Our company cannot afford a top end firewall; all we have is a Linksys vpn router for 5 remote users

    Any suggestion ..

    Things I would do:

    1. Ensure the PC is fully patched before you expose it to the internet.
    2. Install a personal firewall and only open the required ports.
    3. Dont run any services that you dont need to.
    4. Install a decent AV application.

    That's about it.

      As michael said..

Although instead of a personal firewall I would personally just use the TCP/IP filters built into Win2K. A lot simpler and you don't have to worry about

I also use MBSA on each and every server that's going on my network.
