    I have a (dutch) win2003 SBS SP2 server that is suffering from backup problems. Backup Exec 12.5 is installed. When I try to make a backup and select 'System state' the console hangs and I have to kill the process. I tried to backup the 'System state' with ntbackup but that stops with the following error (in dutch):

    Time-out voordat de functie is beŽindigd
    Er is tijdens het maken van de volumeschaduwkopie een fout opgetreden:0xffffffff.

    (translation: Timeout before function completed. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff)

    I searched the eventlogs and found errors regarding VSS. I went to CMDprompt and tried 'vssadmin list providers' and got the following list:

    Providernaam: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
    Providertype: Systeem
    Provider-id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}

    When I try 'vssadmin list writers' it displays the lines below (translated) and waits indefinately:

    Bezig met wachten op reacties.
    Dit wordt mogelijk vertraagd wanneer er een schaduwkopie voorbereid wordt.
    (translation: Waiting for responses. These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared.)

    I've tried installing all updates. Also installed hotfix WindowsServer2003-KB940349-v3-x86-NLD.exe. I followed server articles about removing registry keys and reregistering dll's but none has helped sofar. When the vss errors are fixed the backup will also run I presume. The following is a list of possible relevant errors in the eventlogs (dutch), the latest first, the oldest last

    VSS 6013
    Sqllib-fout: laatste GetCommand van IClientVirtualDevice heeft VD_E_CLOSE niet geretourneerd. In plaats daarvan is hr = IDBInitialize::Initialize geretourneerd.

    Het COM+-subsysteem onderdrukt gedurende 86400 seconden dubbele vermeldingen in het gebeurtenislogboek. De time-out voor onderdrukking kan worden ingesteld met de REG_DWORD-waarde SuppressDuplicateDuration in de volgende registersleutel: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\COM3\Eventlog.

    #50070: Kan geen verbinding maken met database STS_ARTSERVER_1 op ARTSERVER\SharePoint. Controleer de gegevens van de databaseverbinding en zorg ervoor dat de databaseserver actief is.

    P.S. Both the services for VSS are set to automatic and are running

      Install the VSS rollup patch (REBOOT REQUIRED)

        Thanks, found that on the net and already tried it but no luck

          please perform the following steps to reset VSS configuration:
          Go to control panel and reset the com configuration.
          a. In control panel click "add remove programs".
          b. Click "Add remove windows components".
          c. Click the "Next" button (windows will re-initialize the COM
          . Look in "Component Services" MMC and make sure that the MS Shadow Copy
          Provider does not show up as a COM+ application. The software provider
          should NOT show up in Component Services on Windows 2003 and above. If it
          is, you will have trouble initializing the VSS coordinator and provider
          a. In the Component Services MMC, navigate to "Component Services\My
          Computer\COM+ Applications\"
          b. View the properties of the "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" if it
          exists. In the "advanced" tab, uncheck the "Disable deletion" checkbox and
          then delete the "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" from COM+ Applications.
          Run FIXVSS03.BAT to reset VSS configuration.

          perform the following steps to configure higher MinDiffAreaFileSize
          registry value.
          a. Click Start -> Run, type "regedit" in the text box, and press Enter.
          b. Locate the following registry key:
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VolSnap
          c. On the Edit menu, pointed to New, and then clicked DWORD value.
          d. Typed MinDiffAreaFileSize , and then pressed ENTER.
          e. On the Edit menu, clicked Modify.
          f. Changed the size to 3000 (decimal), and then click OK.
          g. Reboot the server to test this issue again.
