  • dnsquerty not recognized as internal or external cmd

    Hi All

A Happy New Year to All here!

    Question.

    Server 2003 R2
DC running DHCP, DNS & WINS
Resource Kit and Suppot tools also installed

"dnsquery is not a recognized internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

I was attempting to use it in this context to obtain the GUID of DC's on my domain
dsquery * “CN=DCName,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=Domain,DC=org,DC=uk” –scope base –attr objectguid

Google provides some insight on other missing commands in XP but nothing 2003 related so no solutions

    Anyone come across this before?

Never seem it before but i'd be checking that the files exists, on a server of mine it was located in c:\system32 along with a DLL file.

Is it worthwhile re-registering said dll using regsrv32 dsquery.dll, might not work but try it and see what happens.

Well that explains it. They're missing!

It's funny though as one DC was a new build and the other upgraded from 2000 and neither have dnsquery.exe in system32.

Can it be extracted from the CD?

From the sources i've found you could try installing the Admin Tools which you should be able to get from here

          Thanks wullieb1

I tried that and now I'm concerned as when I try and install is says it can only install on XP or Server 2003, it even made me check my version when I know its server 2003 SE. Running it afer installing adminpack on XP still can't find dnsquery.

          *sighs*

Is there another way to get the GUID for DC's besides using dnsquery?

Make sure you use the correct version. You'd need the R2 one.
Also check the syntax for any possible typos, there are no Dnsquery executables natively I don't think. Its Dsquery.

The issue has kinda been resolved ish!

The bright spark who installed 2003 SE SP2 and not 2003 SE R2 on two DC's is wearing his iPod internally to remind him that it's better to concentrate on the job at hand and not the Black Eye'd peas!

I just knew I should have checked each step personally

              Thanks for the info guys

......... is wearing his iPod internally to remind him that ..........
Hope he has the extra long earphone lead. I would have thought it better to make sure he had black eyes when he peed. (Pain joke )
