  • Root Hints not working When Recurion Disabled

    Hi
I was studying about Root Hints , Recursion and Iterative Queries.
Microsoft 70-291 and Sybex 70-291 ebook states that

When Recursion is DISABLED on a Win2003 DNS Server , then DNS Server replies back to the DNS Clients with ROOT HINTS REFERRALS ( Root Hints pointing to the one configured on DNS Server )

I had tested the above mentioned Scenario using two SETS .

First Set - Win 2003 Sp2 DNS Server and Win Xp Sp2 DNS Client ( also tested using Win 2003 R2 Sp2 )

Second Set - Win 2008 R2 DNS Server and Windows 7 DNS Client

Recursion is DISABLED on DNS Server and each DNS Client points to its respective DNS Server. Root Hints and rest all Settings are left as Default.

With First Set , i don,t receive any ROOT HINTS Referrals Answers from DNS Srvr

With Second Set , i do receive receive ROOT HINTS Referrals Answers ( a total of 14 RRs pointing to the Root Servers configured at DNS Server Root Hints List )

Now if i try Win 2008 R2 as DNS Server and Win Xp Sp2 as DNS Client --- i still do receive Root Hint Referrals Answer from the DNS Server

So , i think problem is with Win 2003 DNS Server or mine Configuration

    Guys , Help

XP clients don't support non-recursive queries. Not sure why your results differ, maybe post some packet captures.

Yes , Xp DNS Cliets don,t support Non-Recursive Queries ... i.e they don,t do anything of the NON RECURSIVE Queries they receive , if any , i.e don,t resolve them ...

Mine Query is related to that : Xp Clients are not receiving ROOT HINTS Referrals answers from a Win 2003 or Win 2003 R2 DNS Servers ( although docs mention , that 2003 does provide ROOT Hint Referrals )

whereas Win 2008 - Provides Xp DNS CLients with Root Hint Referrals Answers , when RECURSION is Disabled on it.
