  • Mac files with long names

    Hello All,

I'm trying to migrate to a new server and am having trouble with long file names created by Macs. The old server has the following file:
D:\SERV-WS\Marketing\PROJECT\UWC AVCDef Hill GRN HED HIST HSPY INT PERF PLAN RENO RES SCHEM\AVCDE Rick Marks Center 96-0280 99-0480 HED HIST HSPY PLAN\AVCDE Rick Marks Center HED HIST HSPY PLAN\INFO\._Marks Fact Sheet(01C9F4C542BC3AD2).pdf

    (Yes that is one path+filename)

I can't copy those files to the new server using most utils (xcopy, xxcopy, etc) Unfortunately that is only one example, there are other files spread throughout the 2TB worth of data I am trying to move.

Also, I was going to simply use the Arcserve 'copy' function but the server keeps crashing during the operation. (yet another reason we need to migrate away from it)

    Any suggestions?

Re: Mac files with long names

The ._ files are called AppleDouble files (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleDouble) and are hidden files for the mac users. I'm pretty sure you can skip those files...

However, the issue is not MAC but a Microsoft 255 character limitation : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177665/

You might try to use something like (unicode path) \\?\UNC\server\share however I doubt it will work from a prompt.
