  • Moving Shares with Permissions

Can anyone suggest a method for moving shares from one server to another while preserving the permissions? I have two situations where I need to accomplish this. One is moving from an old server to another and the other is moving from a physical server to a virtual server. Any help would be greatly apreciated!

Robocopy or XCopy will retain NTFS permissions, and this shows how to export and reimport share permissions:

Yeah.. there are 2 routes here. One is xcopy as specified by Ossian and the other is Microsoft FSMT ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ocs/msfsc.mspx )

really its 6 of one.. half dozen of the other. The other Admin I work with swears by xcopy and has done all his file share migrations with that, whereas I always use FSMT. Both will offer what you are looking for.
