  • WS 2003/2008 A.D. Integration

    Newbie here...(Great site!),

I have a domain that has the following server operating systems:

1 - Windows Server 2003 Standard (Active Directory, file sever)
1 - Windows Server 2003 Standard (file server; no A.D.)
1 - Windows Server 2000 Standard (file server; no A.D.)
1 - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (application server; no A.D.)

I want to buy another server that will act as a A.D. server that will be the primary A.D. server (Global Catalog) and I want to make my WS 2003 server that is currently the A.D. server act as a "backup" for the A.D.

My question is, should I buy a copy of WS 2003 Standard for this new server or should I just go ahead and buy a copy of WS 2008 Standard? My concern is the proper integration of A.D. between WS 2003 and WS 2008. We want to eventually get all our servers to WS 2008 so I'm hoping to buy WS 2008 for my new server but I want to make sure the WS 2003 A.D. will integrate properly.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I think I found the answer to my own question here:

I've decided to just run a Windows Server 2008 domain functional level.

Then you'll either need to upgrade your W2K3 DC to W2K8 or demote it.
