  • Primary DNS Cutover plan into new Domain Controller in WS 2003

    Hi All,

I've just successfully added one more domain controller into my domain as a replacement server of one of my old DC server, here are the Servers name and its role:

    ServerA - Windows Server 2003 x86 (32 bit) Std.
    IP: 10.2.2.3
    1st DNS (AD Integrated)
    1st DHCP (AD Integrated)
    DC + GC
    Print Server

    ServerB - Windows Server 2003 x64 Std. + Exchange Server 2007 SP1
    IP: 10.2.2.4
    2nd DNS (AD Integrated)
    DC + GC
    All FSMO role holder

ServerC - new one Windows Server 2003 x64 Std.
    IP: 10.2.2.34
    DC+GC

My question is, how am I supposed to move the DNS + DHCP role into new Server C ?
since I am aware that most of the static assigned Server IP address got Server A and Server B IP address for each respective DNS server and also in the DNS entry those Server A and B already got .NS record by itself.

can anyone shed some light in how to make the DNS cutover properly into the new ServerC ?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Since your DNS zone is AD integrated, all you need to do is make sure "All DNS servers in the forest (or domain) is selected in in the DNS zone replication scope and install DNS on server C.

For the DHCP role you have a few options depending on your plans.

One would be to install and configure DHCP (But not activate and authorise) in server C the same as in server A, Reduce the lease time in server A to let's say 1 hrs temporarily, and then do the switch over by authorising and activating the other one and disactivating the old one.
The other option would be to move the DHCP database to the new server:

      Great,

      thanks for the help Landy.

I've done the DNS part and for some reason I could not perform recursive query ?
      simple query is OK

I've set the forwarders to be my ISP DNS server already.

Have you allowed enough time for replication and can you also try DCDiag /test: DNS on server C

Yes I have waited long enough to replicate

ok, thanks for the tips and fast reply.

It is the firewall rule that explicitly only allowing those server A and B on port 53 UDP/TCP.
