  • Lost Desktop icons, Taskbar and Start Menu

    Hi,

I have googled my problem and cannot find an answer.

This weekend I did something to my Windows 2003 TS Server. When any user logins into this server, all they see is Windows Explorer pop up.

I cannot right-click on my background. My Taskbar, Start Menu and all the desktop icon are gone. The only way I can navigate is thru the explorer window.

FYI - Friday I installed Tricerat software and uninstalled it 10 minutes later. I saw the problem after the uninstallation.

    Has anyone seen this problem??

It seems to be that, when a user logs in, the explorer command is being killed by something.

    Please help??

    Give this one a test:

    1) Run taskmgr.exe
    2) Kill all the "explorer.exe" processes owned by your account
    3) From within Task Manager: File-> New Task and type "explorer.exe"

Does this bring the desktop back ?

      Hi,

I have already tried your suggestion and no luck. All it brings up is the explorer window.

I have been trying to troubleshoot this for couple days now and I am almost ready to rebuild the box.

      Any other suggestions,

      Thanks,

      Chintan

          Hi,

Just to make things worse, I have my data backed up but not System State in my last backup.

Yes, I can login to the console.
