  • Push updated printer defaults

We are running a "green" initiative at work and one of our objectives is to make all of our printers print double sided by default. Where as we can get this to work without a problem for any NEW printers, if the user already has the printer installed on their machine, they keep their old settings.

If we remove them and re-add them then it works but we dont want to have to visit every single machine, remove all their printers and re-add them.

This is with printers shared off of a windows 2003 print server.

Any ideas how to push down updated defaults?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Push updated printer defaults

You can simply write a logon script for mapping network printers.

    Ex: rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in /n \\server\share_name\

Yeah, I am sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I want to push down the updated defaults settings. Meaning the printers are already mapped

The problem is when you make a "defaults" change on the print server, those settings don't get pushed down to the workstations. I need to find a way to push down those changes.

What I usually did was unmapping the mapped printers and remap them again through a login script.
You can remember the current default printer in a variable so the users probably won't even notice it

What method have you used to map the printers and what type of port?

I am using the AddWindowsprinterconnection as a logon script here and the TCP/IP port and any amendment on the printer settings on the server are almost immediately propagated below to the client.
