  • Where is File Deleted over Share ?

    Server 2003 DC

I have 'My Documents' redirected to a share.

Problem: I deleted a file from 'My Documents' which I want to get back, but it's not in Recycle Bin of either Local or Server.
I read that files deleted over network do not go into recycle bin and are gone...is this true?

More importantly, is there something out there that prevents this? Either sends deleted folders to recycle bin of local or server, something..anything? Otherwise, I would need to have shadow copy scheduled every 2 hours.

You cannot natively recover files deleted either with the command prompt or over a LAN
3rd party products like "Diskeeper" do an excellent job in this situation, but are not cheap!
Your only free option is Shadow Copy

      Very surprised.
I can't believe Microsoft has fixed this issues, which I think is major and MS needs to address it - major draw back to accessing shared files over network.

      Thanks for info.

Well this is quite common of a lot of Server OSs, but still though backups are the things you need.
However QNAP for instance has the capability for network recycle bin.

Also Windows Vista starts supporting this:

          Dumber,
          you're a life saver.
I've been loosing sleep over my set up because anytime I was expecting a call from someone asking me to recover a file they deleted.

          Gotta upgrade to Vista

However, it would have been nice if recovery was possible via the server (this way only the server would need upgrading) instead of each workstation.

Shadow copy is one answer and the other answer is to change Delete permissions and specifically deny delete for users on any files or folders. So users will have to contact an 'assigned person' to do any deletions. Or, you could create a Trash folder where people can move 'old' documents into it.

Shadow copies or just backups are the regular solutions to help this out.
