  • Effect on Policy - Upgrade Win Srv 2003 SP0 to SP2

    Hi,

I am looking at upgrading all 2003 Server Domain Controllers in a Domain from SP0 to SP2 (yes, I know they are extremely out of date...) however I have been advised that there could be issues with the Policy ADM files being modified which could potentially cause problems. R2 is not installed on the servers however this may be considered in the future.

Can anyone advise what issues may be encountered with Group Policy after upgrading to Service Pack 2?

    Thanks

My suggestion would be to read the release notes and list of fixes for SP2, as a first step.

There was a known issue with ADAM, but I don't recall any ADM issues when we installed SP2 several years ago but I do remember a change to roaming profile names that we had to deal with.

The ADM templates do get updated with SP2. The thing to keep in mind is that the ADM templates only affect what setting appear in the group policy editor when you open it up and that is all.

I recommend that you read this kb article:
Recommendations for Administering Group Policy Templates.
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816662

It explains how adm templates get stored on SYSVOL and what happens when the group policy editor encounters templates that are newer than what's currently stored.

Long story short, if you edit group policies from your workstation or a server that's already SP2, the templates on SYSVOL have already been updated.
