        are the firewalls been down?
Are you sure they are in the same subnet?
Are you sure that the hardware is fine eg the cabling, NIC's and switch/hub's?

          1. firewalls are on; if i need to do something here then pls share the steps and sections to update
          2. yes both machines are in 192.168.1.* subnet
          3. hardware is proper with no issues

                sure,
the changes i made to lmhosts file is to add an entry at bottm like this
                192..xx.xx.xx deskserver #PRE

and in hosts file the following change made things work out
                192..xx.xx.xx deskserver

now im can fully access the shared folders as well the browse the sites among both machines

Re: XP client cant access Win2003 Server in same workgroup

I wonder if you could help me:

If you were trying to ping the server, and it wasn't working, and adding it to the hosts file made it work.. then you were trying to ping the host by name ?

If I'm wrong, please correct me. However if I'm right, and you were trying to ping the host by name and it was failing, here's a step to assist you in troubleshooting in future:

when trying to establish and troubleshoot network connectivity, use the IP address when you ping. Trying to use a name may not give you an effective or ideal answer.

I'm glad that you were able to resolve your issue. Here's one more thing to think about though. What happens if you want to add more computers to your network.. say another 5 or 6... ? You would need to update the hosts file on each computer each time.. I'm not sure entirely what your plan or goal is.. but if you need to go that way, to have more computers, then take a look at DNS - domain name service - this will allow you to use computer names.

(also, so will netbios, but don't use that antiquated crap)

Re: XP client cant access Win2003 Server in same workgroup

The way I read this is that chances are that he still can't ping because the windows firewall or any other is not allowing incoming echo request packets.
The issue could have been a name resolution issue due to the absence or bad config of a DNS server. Which is overcome by editing the Hosts and lmhosts files.

These are just assumptions so the OP might shed some more light into it.
