  • SQL Server on physical machine as to virtual machine

    Hi Guys,

This question is more related to hardware than SQL Server. What would be the advantages of having SQL server on a physical machine as to having it on a Virtual machine.

Can you perhaps give examples with your explanations?

Depends on how much resources the SQL server needs.

If you are using Sharepoint, SQL needs to be on a physical server to be supported by Microsoft, I believe, including WFE servers.

Can't have a clear cut answer on this as it depends on your situation and what is the SQL server going to be used for.
Best thing to do IMO is do some research and get a scrap of paper with Advantages Disadvantages for your company and weight them up.

really comes down to how critical the srver is, and what sort of load it will take.....

That's intersting to hear about Sharepoint not being supported on virtuals.. I know a large Govt Department, that runs a very large sharepoint farm (7+ servers) that are pretty much all virtual.. and this runs a pretty extensive public website here in Aus.

It may be supported now. There was talk to moving towards that but not sure what the position is now.

Edit: found this regarding SQL server virtualisation. It depends on the virtualisation technology used.

This is the article relevant to SharePoint.
