  • Thoughts on Domain Rename

I have a small client (10 users) on a W2K3 AD domain. We need to rename the domain. No, it's not SBS.

Since it's so small and there's no Exchange (just file and print), would it be easier to just dcpromo the one server, remove the domain, dcpromo it again, add the new domain and reconfigure the user accounts/client machines?
    OR
Run through the procedures of the domain renaming found on MS' site?

if you really have to rename it,
do what best suits for you.
Neither is hard but maybe dcpromo is easier.

Have a read of the article and see what is easier or if you want to learn something new. Being lazy I go for easier but I have renamed an AD Domain and these instructions are easy to follow. http://www.petri.com/windows_2003_do...ler_rename.htm
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

Keep in mind that link is for how to rename a DC, not a domain

jjarzabek, please can you confirm what you need to rename - the domain, the DC or both?

I actually dcpromo'd the whole thing. With a small number of clients it was easier. I did have to reconfigure DNS and a few other services but it wasn't too bad - well I guess it was bad but it was better than I thought.

I was renaming the domain. The DC name didn't change.

Nothing like a scroll to the bottom of the linked page for other appropriate articles.
