  • directory password protection in IIS

How can I set up a username and password to protect the 'admin' directory on my website? Its hosted on a shared server. I only have FTP access to the site.

Re: directory password protection in IIS

    1. Login to your website and create 'Admin' directory.
    2. upload a txt file with following contents to 'Admin' directory

    AuthName "Admin Area"
    AuthType Basic
    AuthUserFile /public_html/secure/.htpasswd
    Require valid-user

    3. Create directory named secure inside public_html
    4. upload a txt file with following contents to secure directory

username : password //this should be your username and password to access the directory -- avoid space in front and after :

    5. Rename the first txt file to .htaccess
    6. Rename the second txt file to .htpasswd

    Done!

In windows you can't create files with out any filename and only with extension. But once you uploaded it to web-directory you can do that.

If you are using IIS the web directory should be something similar to vhosts or httpdocs.
