  • Unable to soft reboot windows 2003 server

    Hi All,

I am using windows 2003 server enterprise R2 edition from last two years. All servers are being updated by WSUS and in all server antivirus is updated.

But from the last 20-25 days i am unable to soft reboot or shutdown the server even servers are not showing any error.

when i soft reboot or shutdown the server it hanges for long time then i have to hard boot physically.

Anyone have resolution Please give appropriate resolution as soon as possilbe for the issue.

    Thanks in Advance....

Does the event viewer show anything at the time you are trying to restart/shutdown?

How long are you waiting before you hard reboot it? Can you ping it while it's in the "frozen" state?

        Thanks for quick reply.
No i cant ping that server. i have observe upto 30 min after soft reboot due to servers are in production so cant wait for long time but 30 min is sufficient to reboot.

Nothing shows in event viewer at the time of reboot.

Re: Unable to soft reboot windows 2003 server

Could be a device driver that Windows cannot release.
                Try shutdown from Safe Mode.
Try deactivating devices - I had problem with IDE Tape device.
                Update all firmwares and drivers.

Once the server has booted up again, it would be worth looking at the event viewer and look for events at the times you were restarting.
