  • dnscmd syntax and subdomains

    Hi Everyone,

I am having an issue trying to delete 1 particular PTR record. I believe I have the fix ( However, I am having trouble with the syntax for dnscmd.exe

The record that I want to eventually delete is in a subdomain, and the syntax calls for the zone only. So our reverse zone is, with subdomains for each subnet beneath it. So the xxx subnet would be a subdomain beneath the .xxx.yyy zone.

If I issue an dnscmd /RecordDelete computername PTR 10.x.x.x

    I get an error: Command failed: DNS_ERROR_ZONE_DOES_NOT_EXIST 9601 (00002581)

I can delete a record from the actual yyy.zzz zone, but not the subdomain.

Thank you in advance for any help.

when you say you can delete a record from the zone, but not the subdomain - how do yo umean ?

does it fail if you just give it the zone instead of the subdomain ?

I can delete a record from the zone level ( but not when I add the subdomain The true record that I am trying to delete is at the subdomain level. I just created and then deleted a record at the zone level just to verify that I had the syntax correct.

It fails with the error listed when I try the command including the subdomain level.
