  • Windows Firewall kills client internet connections

    Hi all,

Wonder if anyone could help with a small issue. I have a server running WS2003, AD, DHCP, DNS.

Got all up and running (my first time) alone and with lots of help from this forum and others. Everything is going smooth so far, but I was mostly worried about getting it to work (!) and not security.

Now that everything is running well I want to make sure I'm protected, of course.

Here's the problem I'm having: enabling Windows Firewall on the server kills the internet connection on any machine connected to it through the domain.

Since the server is the DNS server for all those computers, I'm thinking that the Firewall is blocking the DNS requests somewhere along the line, or... something. The internet connection works fine on the server (can ping google.com), and I can still connect to the server from the workstations, just not to the internet.

Any thoughts? What exceptions do I need to add in Windows Firewall to get through?

Alternative, I have the Windows Internet Security and Acceleration Server disc which I haven't used yet (this being my first server admin). I'm guessing that this might be a better and more full featured firewall than the basic built in one? Would you recommend using this?

    Thanks in advance!

Do you have ICS enabled? If so, try disabling it.
For DNS, it uses port 53.

The Windows Firewall and ICS Service are one and the same, unfortunately.

but it looks like those articles did the trick, thanks again.
