  • Huge File and Folder Copy

    Without the drama or whining....

    OS: Windows 2003 Server

I need to copy 34+GB of data in 110,000+ files and folders from F:\Home Directory to G:\Home on the same server. All files and folders need to retain their permissions.

I tried robocopy and it copies the folders with their permissions (very nice) but skipped 87,000 files. There is no way I have found to force it to copy the stuff no matter what but figured out robocopy works more like a backup utility than a copy utility.

In reality I need to move everything from the one location to the other but want to keep the original copy a few days to make sure all permissions and user data was actually copied.

Any idea how to force robocopy to copy everything? Should I have been using a different util?

Any other FREE utilities to suggest or low cost ones? I work for a non profit and am trying not to invest lots of money unnecessarily for a one time move (I hope).

    Thanks,

    B

We use AllSync. It's relatively cheap and you never know when you might need it again.

      Robocopy "\\servername\source-folder" "\\servername\destination-folder" /E /XO

This has always worked for me copying >50GB of data

Only backs up the latest changes to the data.

If there is no data in the destination, it copies everything.

        Blood,

        THANKYOU! <---big thanks

XO did the trick....I forgot to add in the tag to keep the folder dates but I am past caring. Everything copied and then I got to edit 876 shortcuts by hand to fix everything for the users. Monday will be the day to fix all the desktop shortcuts if any.

Thank you joe for the AllSync tip too.

Blood deserves a rep point or 3 IMO. No kidding.
