  • Promote DC as additional domain.

    Hi all,

I'm newbie and freshgraduate from University.
My company need me to setup a domain controller for newly join subsidiary.
Currently I am not sure my step is correct or not.
Hope you guys able to advise and correct my mistake.

    Company environment:
    Single Forest Single Domain.
Forest Functional level: Windows Server 2003
Domain Functional level: Windows Server 2003

    My steps on this project.
    1. Setup a Windows Server.
    2. Configure Static IP and Prefer DNS Server.
    3. Setup DNS Server (Incase DNS installation failure during dcpromo)
    4. Perform dcpromo Select additional DC for additional domain.
    5. Restart Server
    6. Create New Site
    7. Create new Subnet
    8. Assign new subnet to new site.
    9. Set replication schedule.
    10. On DNS create Reverse Lookup Zone
    11. Set Forwarder.

    Question
    1. Am I correct? I just read and study myself and feel not sure my way is correct or not?
    2. Is there have any documentation or check list of promote an existing domain?

Seems to be fine for starters. On (3), I'd make sure the new server is a DNS server first; at any rate, make sure that you get DNS working right before you do a DCpromo. You'll save yourself a ton of headaches.

You could do 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 before the new server goes in.

Will you be installing the server at your site or another site?? If its yours then AD will put it into your site so will need moved out of yours into another.

        Hi Parkham,
How to make sure DNS working right before do a DCpromo?
U mean before I do DCpromo, the reverse lookup zone and forwarder need to be set?

        Hi Wullieb1,
Thanks for advise, the DC will in another country that mean not in my site.
If in my situation, I will follow your advise on 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11.
Is that anything I miss out?

Re: Promote DC as additional domain.

Personally I would do two things:

          1. Make sure that your current DNS is AD integrated.

          2. Let the DCPROMO process on the new server install and configure DNS. Why do it manually beforehand? I've never seen the DCPROMO process make a mistake with installing and configuring DNS. You're more likely to make a mistake (as we all are) then the DCPROMO process is.

Re: Promote DC as additional domain.

Is you addressing scheme already setup and VPN tunnels created to link the offices???

If you setup your sites and subnets that are associated with the site then one it detects that subnet it will put it in that site automatically.

You can configure DNS prior to the AD install and setup your forwarders etc prior to this. Once DNS is integrated with AD it will replicate anyway.

              Thanks for your advise.
Network will be done by other person.
I will only promote DC once the network is connected.
